Fishing

Freshwater fishing is a popular leisure activity enjoyed within the Pine Barrens.  Crappie, sunfish, yellow perch, black bass, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, a variety of trout species and more are found within these waters.   A free DEC Fishing License is required to fish in many lakes, ponds, and streams located on New York State DEC preserved areas within the Pine Barrens.  The following are a number of popular local fishing holes maintained by the DEC:

Many parks in Suffolk County also provide numerous opportunities for freshwater and saltwater fishing.  A New York State Fishing License is required to freshwater fish in many of these parks.  A fishing license can be obtained at your local sporting goods store or a bait and tackle shop.  The following is a list of state, county and national refuges that offer fishing locations.

Southaven County Park allows fishing from sunrise to sunset and offers stream and lake fishing for brook and rainbow trout, largemouth bass, bluegills and perch.  Located off of Victory Avenue in Brookhaven. 

Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge , managed by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, provides both fresh, saltwater and brackish fishing where the following species are found: brook trout, largemouth bass, northern puffer, winter flounder, bass, American eel, bay anchovy, and many more. There is fishing access by boat along the Carmans River and by a fishing access area along Montauk Highway.  State and federal fishing regulations apply.
